I've worked with a lot of nonprofit organizations - humanitarian aid, churches, mission groups and so on. I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. And I've seen leadership of nonprofits bewildered as to why their organization starts to lose momentum; with donors and volunteers drifting away.
From my observations, these are some of the reasons for a nonprofits decline.
1. Do not acknowledge donations – especially large donations.
2. Keep finances secret or hard to obtain.
3. Do not return contact attempts (calls, emails, letters).
4. Do not keep donors/members informed of activities and events.
5. Do not keep to posted business hours.
6. Do not respond to people who offer to do volunteer work.
7. Overwork and under appreciate volunteers.
8. Display an attitude that suggests volunteers/donors should feel privileged to work with the nonprofit.
9. Expect poor planning to become the volunteer’s emergency.
10. Do not keep meetings.
